The Baltic MUPPETS project has been extended by four months until 31st of March 2026. This extension gives the consortium more time to reach further with the ongoing initiatives and develop additional products, increasing the project’s long-term impact across the Baltic region.
Since its launch in December 2022, the consortium has made strong progress. With just four milestones left to reach our target of 17, and 17 deliverables already approved, Baltic MUPPETS is well on track. These results aren’t just on paper: four types of products have been completed, some of which are already on the market, with more to follow.
Before looking ahead, we want to highlight some of the innovations already delivered by our partners. The University of Tartu developed its decision support system to assess the environmental impact of mussel farms in the Baltic Sea. Wittrup Seafood prototyped a mussel harvester for the submerged farms to optimise production. The Christian Albrechts University in Kiel has developed recipes for mussel-based pet food, while ECOPELAG introduced Sjötugg Sea Bites, freeze-dried mussels now available on the Swedish pet market. Grobruket has also tested its recipes for fertiliser and soil enhancers, which are now getting ready for market launch.
So, what’s next? The extra time will be used to finalise the next wave of products and deliverables, as well as to add additional ones to the lot. Ecopelag is expanding the Sjötugg range, while Grobruket is developing a process for scaling up the garden products together with them. Wittrup Seafood is working on a second-generation harvester, incorporating lessons learned from the prototype to deliver a more efficient and scalable solution. Meanwhile, Blue Research includes a business case model that captures both revenue potential and ecosystem service value.
By April 2026, Baltic MUPPETS expects to have at least six different products (!) on the market, along with many more deliverables packed with insights from our experts.
