[Berlin, 22 January 2024] — Grobruket AB, a Swedish pioneer in sustainable horticulture, is proud to announce its participation in the Baltic MUPPETS consortium. This collaboration marks a significant step towards fostering a circular economy in the Baltic Sea Region and supporting mussel farmers across Europe.

Baltic MUPPETS focuses on developing new value chains for small mussels (1-3 cm) from the Baltic Sea, specifically for pet food. The consortium is dedicated to innovating technologies for farming, harvesting, and processing mussels. The initiative will establish a new circular economy in the Baltic Sea Region. This will support mussel farmers across Europe to develop, diversify, and scale their businesses increasing resilience and competitivity.

Baltic MUPPETS is a three-year project co-funded by the ERDF Interregional Innovation Investments Instrument (I3) of the European Commission. The project brings together 13 partners from five countries with expertise in multiple sectors of the mussel supply chain, from mussel production to processing, product development, marketing, and financing, among others. Baltic MUPPETS works on three tangible business cases –located in Sweden, Germany, and Denmark– that serve as demonstrators.

Grobruket, renowned for its commitment to driving the development of sustainable horticulture products for hobby growers, will play a crucial role in the project. The company, situated strategically near SLU Alnarp, boasts an extensive development facility equipped with a greenhouse, growing chambers, and open-field cultivations.

At the intersection of research, development, and cultivation, Grobruket collaborates with researchers and students at SLU Alnarp to elevate industry standards. The company’s mission is to simplify growing, make it sustainable, and infuse it with joy.

In alignment with its dedication to sustainability, Grobruket’s involvement in the Baltic MUPPETS project will focus on developing methods to utilize residual products from mussel production in the Baltic Sea. The aim is to launch a series of fertilizer products that benefit both sea and land, effectively closing the cycle of production and consumption. For this, Grobruket will carry out trials with various crops using fertilizers made with mussels’ side streams such as shells. The Swedish company will then assess product readiness based on results.

By actively participating in the Baltic MUPPETS consortium, Grobruket reaffirms its commitment to driving innovation that not only benefits horticulture enthusiasts but also contributes to the overall well-being of our environment.
